A trifecta of amazing musicals are hitting Sydney
It’s raining musicals in Sydney with a trifecta of hits premiering in the city over the next two years!
Sydney is getting geared up to welcome three brand-new musicals to its legendary stages, and we couldn’t be more excited for their glittering arrivals.
Broadway institution, Chicago, the Kander & Ebb classic, will be the first cab off the rank, opening at Sydney Lyric Theatre in 2019. Disco classic, Saturday Night Fever will then head to the Capitol Theatre in 2019 and finally, Sara Bareilles’ Broadway smash-hit Waitress will make its Australian Premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in 2020.
Phew! Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s have a closer look at each of the shows.
Waitress the Musical
Waitress the Musical has been SMASHING it on Broadway for almost three years and now is heading down under with an Australian premiere at Sydney Lyric Theatre in 2020. With an original score by Sara Bareilles, a powerhouse all-female creative team and a sweet-as-pie story based on the 2007 movie of the same name, this is a sweet treat you won’t want to miss.
Chicago
Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and even a Grammy, Chicago is a best-loved musical, also holding the record for the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The 2002 feature film adaptation even won the Academy Award for best picture, the first musical to win the award since 1968. Featuring hit after hit, Chicago will Razzle Dazzle audiences, whether it’s their first or 100th time at the theatre.
Saturday Night Fever
Paying homage to the 1977 movie classic starring John Travolta, Saturday Night Fever is the story of Tony Manero and his exhilarating quest to break free of conformity and become dance king. The show is packed with disco classics, including the Bee Gees’ greatest hits Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever, Tragedy and More Than A Woman.
