We were already excited for Tina Arena‘s upcoming tour and the totally unrelated announcement of Evita, but now we’re seriously pumped.

Why the double excitement? Well it’s only been confirmed that Tina Arena has landed a role in the Australian production of Evita.

The Aussie pop icon will appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s show when it comes to Sydney Opera House next year.

She’ll be playing the iconic role of Eva Peron in the 40th anniversary production at the Opera House’s Joan Sutherland Theatre from 13 September.

It’s been more than a decade since Tina last hit the stage, playing Roxie Hart in the London production of Chicago. While her last Australian stage role was as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in Sydney in 2002.

Talking about the announcement, Tina said, “I have been approached to do this role on a couple of occasions. I never felt emotionally ready for it. I felt I had a lot of living and learning before I could get up and take on the enormity of the story and the human spirit she possessed.”

Evita will also be overseen by the original creative team including celebrated director Hal Prince.

“I am absolutely thrilled that my wish that Hal Prince’s wonderful production of Evita should be seen again is to be fulfilled, and to renew my association with Tina Arena,” he said.
