If you’ve been going back and forth about locking in your next trip to Sydney, we know exactly what will get you over the line – Frozen The Musical is making its Australian debut at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre.

Tell me about Frozen The Musical

You probably don’t need much background info here, but Frozen The Musical is based on the 2013 film of the same name that brought us the inescapable singalong hit ‘Let It Go’ – which reached the top five on the Billboard 100 Chart and won both the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2015 and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media in 2015 – along with ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman?’ and ‘In Summer’ – we know the songs are already stuck in your head.

The film scored itself a hefty stack of awards and nominations right across awards season, and the gorgeous soundtrack – brought to life by the vocals of Broadway stars Idina Menzel (Rent, Wicked), Josh Gadd (Book of Mormon, Beauty and the Beast) and Jonathon Groff (Hamilton, Spring Awakening) – makes it perfect for a Broadway production.

The best bit? Alongside the songs you already know, Frozen The Musical features a dozen new songs created exclusively for the stage, and alongside sensational special effects, stunning sets and costumes, and powerhouse performances, Frozen is a truly unforgettable theatrical experience

Why the Capitol Theatre?

In short, why not? The historic theatre, located in Sydney’s central business district of Haymarket, began as a market space in 1892 selling produce and hay (it’s all in the name right?). In the early 20th century, the space was converted into a ‘hippodrome’ – a theatre or stadium for circuses and other popular events. First used by the Wirth Bros. Circus before being remodelled as a picture theatre in the late ’20s, with the official opening night of ‘The Capitol’ on the 7th of April 1928.

The design was a unique concept of the time called an ‘atmospheric theatre’. If you can take your eyes away from the onstage action for even a brief moment, take a look at the roof. That beautiful starry sky effect is part of that design and was originally meant to make you feel like you were watching a film in an elegant outdoor garden. Of the five atmospheric theatres built in Australia during this time, the Capitol Theatre is the last one standing. While the original atmospheric elements were removed in the ’70s, in the early ’90s The Capitol was restored to its former breathtaking glory.

The first musical performed at The Capitol was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972. Since then, it has held performances of world-class productions including Miss Saigon, Kinky Boots, Fame, Guys and Dolls, Hair, and Priscilla as well as concerts from superstars including Bruce Springsteen, Kylie Minogue, Diana Ross, Iron Maiden, and more.
