How Shen Yun has mastered meaningful storytelling for the stage

Shen Yun is one of the world’s best-loved stage productions, returning to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre next week.

Ahead of its four-show stint at one of the city’s most historic theatres, we’re delving into what makes the show such a sell-out success across the globe.

Now performed by five companies across the world, Shen Yun is a unique class of storytelling that’s full of thought-provoking moments.

Bringing a captivating dance troupe – all capable of being leading dancers in their own right – together with a live orchestra, the show powers through 22 different acts, each with its own meaningful message.

With morals surrounding love, family, respect, friendship and so much more, Shen Yun combines the best of Chinese and Westeren composition to create a show that translates the world over.

Fashions fans will fall head over heels for the show, as the dancers switch between around 400 different costumes throughout the performance.

With the Regent Theatre providing the perfect background, Shen Yun is so visually stunning that even first timers will feel right at home.

Although drenched in tradition, theatre-goers can rest assured that it remains one of the most timeless shows on the stage today.

The official show summary reads, “In accident times, China was known as the Land of the Divine. Everyone, from emperors to the common people, believed that their culture was a gift from heaven. They lived in harmony with the universe and saw a connection among all things. Traditional Chinese culture carried these principles for thousands of years—until this world was lost.”

It’s these principles that form the backbone of the captivating show, while exploring traditional culture to an enchanting live orchestral soundtrack.
