The secret to happiness is inside...
Muriel is back big time in Sydney. Now playing a return season in the city that has, perhaps, the catchiest tune in the show named after it, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is once again capturing the hearts of Sydneysiders.
The beloved Australian film that spurred the careers of Toni Collette and Rachael Griffiths launched a musical adaptation in 2017. With a book by the film’s original writer and director P.J Hogan and music and lyrics by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall, and of course a few of your favourite ABBA songs, the musical was bound to be a success. Almost two years later Sydney cannot get enough of Muriel Heslop.
Natalie Abbot and Madeleine Jones, who play Muriel and Rhonda respectively, absolutely shine in their roles. Abbot’s Muriel is endearingly naïve and seeing the world through her eyes is what makes this story so special. Jones’ Rhonda is brash and raw with the pair’s friendship giving us absolute #squadgoals.
Pippa Grandison, who appeared in the 1994 film, takes on the role of Muriel’s mother Betty Heslop. A tragic figure, Grandison portrays some of the toughest themes of the show with truth and grace. Our hearts broke with her and for her.
With a mixtape of upbeat modern, poppy numbers and ABBA classics, along with heartbreaking ballads, Muriel’s Wedding is unexpected in all the best ways. We can’t recommend enough that you head down to the Sydney Lyric to see this one, with all the Broadway blockbusters headed Down Under in the next little while, don’t let this home-grown hit slip by.
And who knows, perhaps this Aussie hero is on its way to becoming the next Broadway blockbuster. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.com.au with performances running until just the 8th of September.
