Ladies In Black is everyone’s new favourite musical, here’s why

Ladies In Black is coming to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre this summer, for a strictly limited season throughout February 2017.

So why exactly is everyone so excited about this show? Well it’s award winning, for one thing…

Having already bagged the ‘Best New Australian Work’ Helpmann Award, Ladies In Black comes to us from mastermind director Simon Phillips; the man behind Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical, Love Never Dies, First Wives Club, and writer Carolyn Burns. Music and lyrics come from Tim Finn.

The production is based on Madeleine St John’s Novel, The Women in Black and was dubbed, “The best Aussie musical since Priscilla went global,” by Sydney Morning Herald.

There’s a star cast

New to the cast for the Australian tour is screen and stage star Natalie Gamsu (Strictly Ballroom, Mary Poppins, Dr Zhivago, Neighbours) who takes on the role of Magda, as well as Sydney-based Madeleine Jones; a Helpmann Award-nominee in 2015 thanks to her work in Once. Jones will play Patty in the show.

Meanwhile revisiting her role as starry-eyed school-leaver, Lisa, is Sarah Morrison, while Bobby Fox (Jersey Boys) also returns to the role of Rudi. Joining them will be Carita Farrer Spencer as Mrs Miles, Kathryn McIntyre as Myra and Kate Cole as Miss Cartwright and Joy.

Bright, funny and charming

Ladies In Black is set in Sydney, 1959 – a city compromised with the repression of the ’50s and liberation of ’60s.

The plot follows bright-eyed and bookish Lisa as she discovers the colourful world of prestigious department store F.G. Goodes.

This modern-day tale is every bit charming as it is irreverently funny.

Ladies In Black is now booking at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, with a limited run between 25 February and 18 March 2017 – book now at Ticketmaster.com.au.
