Chicago the Broadway musical is making its razzle-dazzle return to Australian stages in August at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. with a Melbourne season recently announced for Arts Centre Melbourne’s summer musical.

A Broadway institution, Chicago is a Kander and Ebb classic, with original choreography by the legendary Bob Fosse and its 1996 revival becoming the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

With such huge names having performed the roles on Broadway over the years including Chita Rivera, Brooke Shields, Sophia Vergara, Cuba Gooding Jr. Michael C. Hall Todrick Hall and Jerry Springer, these are big shoes to fill.

Luckily the Australian cast has been announced and it is epic – so in case you missed it, we’ve put together a handy guide to the Aussie cast so you can get as pumped as us.

Roxie Hart

Natalie Bassingthwaighte will play aspiring star and murderess Roxie Hart. Recently seen on the stage of the Sydney Opera House as part of the all-star cast of Funny Girl in Concert, Bassingthwaighte has appeared in multiple Australian stage productions including Grease, Rent, Footloose and Chicago.

On screen, we all know and love Bassingthwaighte from her stint as Izzy Hoyland in the Aussie classic Neighbours. She recently reprised her Logie-nominated role more than ten years later. Bassingthwaighte’s other screen acting credits include The Wrong Girl, Underbelly, The Lost World, and The Mystery of Natalie Wood. She has also made a name for herself as a presenter, hosting Changing Rooms on Channel Ten and giving out sound advice as a judge and mentor on X-Factor Australia.

Bassingthwaighte’s powerhouse voice has also earned her great recognition with a successful solo career as well as international fame as the lead singer of the Rogue Traders, with whom she achieved multi-platinum sales.

Velma Kelly

We most recently saw Alinta Chidzey delivering a flawlessly hilarious performance in The Production Company’s Australian premiere of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. We have no doubt Chidzey will slay as Velma Kelly, a nightclub singer accused of murdering her husband and sister.

Alinta is a mainstay with The Production Company, having starred in Jesus Christ Superstar, Show Boat, Singin’ in the Rain, Chess (for which she won a Green Room award) and Curtains. She also recently was lucky enough to tour with Hugh Jackman in his recent Broadway to Oz show.

Chidzey has also achieved accolades for many of her other stage performances. Her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story earned her nominations for a Helpmann Award, a Green Room Award, and a Sydney Theatre Award. With her performance of Mickey in Leader of The Pack giving her a Green Room Award win for best-featured ensemble in a musical.

Aside from stage and screen Alinta also performs as a jazz singer and songwriter and will release her first original music album this month.

Matron ‘Mama’ Morton

Casey Donovan is best known to most Australians for winning the second season of Australian Idol in 2004 when she was just 16.

Since then she has won the series I’m a Celebrity Get Me out of Here and begun a celebrated stage career with roles in The Flower Children, As You Like It, Opera Yarrabah, The Sapphires, Rent and We Will Rock You. Her powerhouse vocals are the perfect match for Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.
