The Presidents Cup takes place in Melbourne from Monday 9 until Sunday 15 December, 2019, with Tiger Woods leading the U.S team and Ernie Els leading the Internationals.

Woods has just announced three of his captain’s assistants for 2019, with the option to still appoint one more prior to the tournament. Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, and Steve Stricker will all join Woods in leading out the U.S team.

Couples has taken the reigns as captain three times (2009, 2011, 2013) himself, and this will be the third time he has served as a captain’s assistant (2015, 2017). Speaking about joining Woods and returning to Royal Melbourne, where this year’s tournament will be held, Couples said, “I’ve enjoyed being a captain’s assistant for the past two Presidents Cups, and to support Tiger in his first captaincy is going to be a very special experience.

“Plus, to return to one of my favourite venues, Royal Melbourne, is going to be a real treat. The fans in Australia really know their golf and create an unbelievable atmosphere for the players, so I’m excited to return and help this team win.”

It will be Zach Johnson’s first time as a captain’s assistant, after four Presidents Cup appearances (2007, 2009, 2013, 2015). Johnson also spoke of his appointment. “To be named a captain’s assistant in the Presidents Cup for the first time is a real honour,” Johnson said. “Having competed with Tiger in the Presidents Cup in the past, I’ve always admired the pride he takes in these team events. I’m thrilled he’s chosen to trust me with this important role, and I look forward to doing my part to help the team succeed.”

Stricker has served as a captain’s assistant once before (2015), while being named captain himself in 2017 and selecting Woods as an assistant.

“I can’t say enough about the opportunity to serve as an assistant for Tiger’s first captaincy,” Stricker said. “Tiger was such a valuable member of our team in 2017 and I’m humbled that he sees me as an asset to the 2019 team. I look forward to helping him in any way he may need with his captaincy just like he helped me in 2017.”

The Presidents Cup will be held at Royal Melbourne Golf Club from Monday 9 until Sunday 15 December, 2019. You can head to Ticketmaster.com.au to sign up to the waitlist, and be the first to know when tickets go on sale.
