One football season ends, and another begins – the 2019/20 Hyundai A-League season is on its way.
Marvel Stadium has today announced the return of The Octagon® on Sunday 6 October. Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker will face Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya in a five-round Championship bout.
Australia’s first UFC champion Whittaker heads into the fight to defend his 185-pound belt against the interim title holder, Adesanya. UFC® 243 will be the Western Sydney fighter’s first title defence on home soil.
On his way to becoming UFC Middleweight Champion, Whittaker twice defeated Yoel Romero, with the second win coming after breaking his hand in the first round.
While Whittaker’s 20-4 is an impressive record, Adesanya, a Nigerian born New-Zealand local remains undefeated at 17-0 so this bout is sure to be hotly contested.
UFC President Dana White says of the event, “This is the perfect fight at the perfect time with the two best athletes in the division.
“I am pumped to go back to Melbourne for this massive event. To have two champions in Whittaker and Adesanya fighting for the title on home turf is huge. This will be the biggest fight in Australian history.”
Marvel Stadium itself can lay claim to the largest UFC event of all time, hosting 56,214 fans at UFC® 193 as Rhonda Rousey was taken out by Holly Holm.
