AROUND THE GROUNDS

There are activities and festivities for fans of all ages with everything from traditional Irish dance and music, hurling clinics, market stalls, comedy, face painting, marching bands, buskers, amusement rides, player autograph sessions, and plenty more family-friendly activities spread across the festival’s two days. Check out the map below to help get your bearings early.

SATURDAY

There’s a heap of musical goodness to get around on Saturday. Over at the Irish Music stage local Irish outfits The Hooleys, Hooper & Toole, The Irish Rogues and Gerry Faulkner will be treating fans to tunes right throughout the day – launching at 11.15am and wrapping up at 6pm.

Then from 6.30pm, the Concert Stage lights up, hosting performances from some of the Emerald Isle’s musical treasures. It kicks off with Saint Sister, before Lúnasa, Mary Black, and Damien Dempsey take to the stage.

No matter your age, there’s something for everyone at Sydney Irish Festival and Davis Amphitheatre Family Stage has something to entertain even the littlest páist. Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol Show will feature rescue pups Chase and Marshall, while Bananas in Pyjamas, and Cox Academy of Irish Dance will also make appearances.

SUNDAY

Sunday also opens with a selection of family-friendly activities and top-notch live music, but the real highlight is the hurling.

A curtain raiser match between New South Wales and Victoria commences at 1.30pm, before we get prepped for the big one – the Wild Geese Trophy. At 3pm, we’ll welcome the teams into the stadium, with tip-off for the big game at 3.30pm.

The Wild Geese Trophy will be battled out between 2018 National Hurling League victors Kilkenny and 2017 All Ireland champions and archrivals, Galway. Widely considered to be the fastest game on grass, it features two 15-person teams to drive a ball down the field with a stick in order to score a goal – and we promise this 3,000-year-old game is bound to get intense.

Capping off the whole festival will be a performance from Blackwater Band.

Wow, what a weekend.

The 2018 Sydney Irish Festival will be held over two days at Sydney Showground, from Saturday 10 November to Sunday 11 November.
