The ISPS Handa World Super 6 will tee off in Perth on Thursday 14 February, running until Sunday 17 February at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

The four-day tournament will display 54 holes of traditional stroke play from Thursday to Saturday, before what’s sure to be a riveting knockout match format takes over on the Sunday.

Who’s playing?

The biggest name confirmed thus far is Thomas Pieters, fresh off his win at the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne with Belgium. Pieters, with his partner Thomas Detry, took Belgium to victory in November 2018, claiming the nation’s first World Cup title. The pair took out the trophy with a final-hole birdie to claim a three-shot win over Mexico, with the Aussies finishing in third.

Pieters spoke ahead of arriving in Australia, saying, “I always enjoy playing in Australia and from what I remember Lake Karrinyup is a fantastic layout that I am looking forward to playing again.

“I enjoyed playing and hosting the Belgian Knockout. Different formats of the game are interesting and help engage the fans. I think these tournaments are helping move golf in a positive direction.”

The World Number 70 will be joined by Englishman Tom Lewis,  Australian Lucas Herbert, New Zealander Ryan Fox, Spaniard Jorge Campillo and Japan’s Yusaku Miyazato.

Fox, Herbert, Lewis, and Myazato have all competed in the World Super 6 previously. Young Aussie Herbert made a huge leap up the Official World Golf Rankings in 2018, reaching as high as 78 and is currently ranked at 85. He is the fifth-ranked Australian in the world, only sitting behind stars Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Cameron Smith and Adam Scott.

After finishing third at this event last year, Herbert says he is very much looking forward to returning. “I started this year without status on a major Tour but with the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth being tri-sanctioned with Europe and Asia, I knew the tournament presented some opportunities I needed to capitalise on,” Herbert says.

“I played really well in Perth, I love Lake Karrinyup and the fast-paced Super 6 format suits the way I like to play golf – aggressive. I was able to turn a really good week in Perth into a pretty special year.

“I am looking forward to getting back there in February as a European Tour player and hopefully end the week a European Tour winner.”

Tournament Format

The tournament format is sure to entertain fans, designed to maintain the traditions of golf, while incorporating exciting elements to appeal to a broader audience. There will be 54 holes of traditional stroke play through the first three days, before a final day knockout format.

After 36 holes on the opening two days, a regular cut will take place, before a further cut reduces the field to 24 players after the 54 holes are completed on day three. Any ties for 24th place will be decided by a play-off.

The remaining 24 players will then compete in a six-hole shootout. After the six holes, any matches tied will be decided via a brand new ‘Shootout Hole’. The Shootout Hole is a purpose-built 90-metre hole at the course, with the tee placed adjected to the fairway on the 18th, utilizing the 18th green.
