Inaugural NAB AFLW Derby raises funds for bushfire relief

Footy is back!

For the first time ever in the NAB AFLW competition, West Coast Eagles will face Fremantle for the Derby.

The clash will raise funds to further support relief and recovery efforts for the Australian bushfires through the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund.

All fees for the event have been waived, with all proceeds from the $3 cost of entry going towards the emergency assistance and relief efforts.

“All Australians have great empathy for those directly affected by the devastating bushfires that have raged across the country in recent months,” says West Coast Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett. “There have been so many heart-breaking stories and so many families left to pick up the pieces. Hopefully we can combine with Fremantle to raise significant funds that can assist those people as they begin to rebuild their lives.

“The hearts of our players, staff and supporters go out to all of those affected by this tragedy, including the wildlife and the heroes in emergency services who are working tirelessly to protect their fellow Australians,” says Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick. “While we know this game will not be able to assist all those impacted by this disaster, we hope that our contribution can help in some way.”

The match will be held at Optus Stadium on Saturday 15 February, beginning at 4.10pm.

Admission will also include free public transport in Perth with the State Government waiving costs.

This will be the West Coast Eagles first home game as they enter the NAB AFLW competition for the first time.

Fremantle have been a part of the competition since it’s inception in 2017, with the league expanding to 14 teams in 2020.

After finishing second in Conference A in 2019 with their best season to date, the Dockers fell at the first stage of the finals to Carlton, and will be keen to redeem themselves in 2020.
