The Maine – My Best Habit

If you aren’t well acquainted with Arizona rockers The Maine yet, now is definitely the time to get on the team. At the end of next month, the band are set to release their seventh album You Are Ok, and judging by the first two singles it could very well be their biggest yet. Across their last few records, The Maine have finally been embracing the pop sensibilities they shied away from for years. My Best Habit is the groovy, upbeat banger we all deserve – and that chorus hook is HUGE. It’s also the first time we’ve heard The Maine with strings, proving that they’re still willing to push the envelope even after 12 years.

Alex Lahey – Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself

Her debut album, 2017’s I Love You Like A Brother, absolutely blew us away so we have been eagerly awaiting what might come next.  Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself picks up right where the album left off, only everything is a little bit tighter and the hooks are a whole lot bigger. Oh yeah, and there’s a juicy sax solo to sink your teeth into. The album is called The Best of Luck Club and it’s out Friday 17 May. Catch Alex Lahey on tour this June. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Harrison Storm – Run

Need to escape? Take three minutes and get away with Melbourne singer-songwriter Harrison Storm. A beautifully, simple melody carries Storm’s honey-smooth vocal in what is another absolute treat from the musician. He’ll be hitting the road with Ziggy Alberts around Europe and the UK, and we can’t wait to see what he comes back with.

James Bay X Julia Michaels – Peer Pressure

Look up ‘perfect pop pairings’ in the dictionary, and we’re certain that right now there is a picture of James Bay and Julia Michaels staring longingly at each other, because Peer Pressure is three minutes of pure bliss. Beginning as a tender acoustic-ballad, the track soon opens up showcasing the best of both vocalists. Peer Pressure follows up James Bay’s second album Electric Light which dropped mid-last year, meanwhile, Julia Michaels released her new EP, Inner Monologue, Pt. 1 in January. Julia Michaels will be on our shores this September, tickets are available via Ticketmaster.com.au.

John Mayer – I Guess I Just Feel Like

It feels like we have been waiting forever for another taste of whatever John Mayer is cooking up next. Previous single New Light is an absolute earworm, built around slick, soulful guitar and catchy pop hooks, but I Guess I Just Feel Like shows a completely different Mayer. Going back to his roots, it is tender and intimate – delicate, simple guitar carries Mayer’s dreamy vocal. Don’t be dismayed though, this wouldn’t be a John Mayer track without some sort of guitar solo.

Alice Ivy X Flint Eastwood – Close To You

While they exist in very separate part of the musical landscape, the coming together of Alice Ivy and Flint Eastwood is pure fire. Alice has become a favourite of ours over the years through her expert knack for layering samples and sounds to create a sound that is easy to describe as Avalanches-esque but still remains quite her own. Flint Eastwood, on the other hand, has carved out her own niche in the left-field pop scene, and here her powerhouse vocals are on display. With their sounds coming together we’ve been given a tasty slice of electro-pop perfection.

Riley Pearce – Windmill

Windmill is the first taste of what’s to come when Perth singer-songwriter Riley Pearce releases his new EP The Landing Songs this April. Against a sparse, dreamy background Pearce’s vocals float along – it’s lush and beautiful and we’re sure it’ll be stuck in your head in no time at all. With a sound far more mature and confident than the years behind him, we’re predicting big things to come for Pearce in 2019.

Maren Morris – The Bones

Just ahead of the arrival of her new album Girl, Maren Marris has given us one final preview taste in The Bones. The uplifting pop song is a loved-up anthem, layered in a soulful groove. There’s the slightest sprinkle of country throughout, but it’s safe to say Morris has moved away from the most ‘country’ elements of her sound, though as she says, “A banjo or fiddle doesn’t make a country song, it’s the core-cutting truth that does.” Maren Morris will be on our shores this August, tickets available via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Sam Phay – Fool

Prepare yourself, because this track is sure to have you melting. Melbourne vocalist Sam Phay’s greatest weapon is his vocal – smooth as honey, and layered in soul, he knows exactly how to adapt it to any musical situation with effortless ease. On latest single Fool – his second as a solo artist – Phay’s croon is carried by swirling, gentle production. It’s a different take on his sound from debut single Trace, and a far cry from what you may know of Phay as frontman of Club Yorke (previously Residual). With an EP due out later this year, wcan’tnt wait to hear more of what is in store.
