Infectious, tender, and warm are the first three words that come to mind when trying to describe the musical catalogue of Tyne-James Organ. The Wollongong native (now based in Melbourne) has been slowly dripping musical releases across the last three years – one release each year since 2016 – and every song has seen the singer-songwriter take leaps and bounds forward.
He has become a cult favourite among the Australian indie/pop scene. Originally, the country fell in love with Organ thanks to a series of unique and captivating acoustic covers posted on Youtube – stripped back versions of tracks by everyone from George Ezra, to Frank Ocean, MGMT, to Childish Gambino. Before releasing any original material, he’d already amassed an army of dedicated fans, landed himself tour supports alongside the likes of Allday, The Beautiful Girls, and Little Sea, and played his own headlining shows around the country.
But it was when he released his official debut single in 2016, ‘In My Arms’, that he truly had the country under his spell. A year later, and ‘Watch You Go’ had listeners wrapped in the lush, rich soundscape he had created – more raw and vulnerable than his previous offering, Organ was proving the wait was well and truly worth it. 2018’s ‘Graceful’ pushed things further once again. Without losing any of the warmth, charm, or delicacy, Organ injected the track with a pop-tinge and catchy melody listeners hadn’t heard before.
On the live stage is where Tyne-James Organ truly shines. He has brought his incredible live show to stages right around the country – from some of our favourite bandrooms to festivals including Party In The Paddock, Fairgrounds, Bigsound, and soon Splendour In The Grass.
Now we find him at his latest release, ‘Something New’. Shrugging off his delicate indie-pop stylings, Organ is diving headfirst into rock territory. Gritty and angry, this track is by far the biggest thing Organ has released so far. Right now it feels like he is sitting right on the edge of some very big things. Watch this space.

The Story
From the beginning
Tyne-James Organ: “I grew up with my dad being a musician, so I was always surrounded by music. My family would always be singing and dancing. I sang from a young age, but nothing ever serious. In my first few years of high school, I realised it was something I really loved and when my dad bought me a ukulele I knew music was something I would do forever. I started writing a few songs, moved onto guitar, and haven’t stopped. I’m still pretty shit at guitar, but it makes me happy.”
What you’ll hear
TJO: “That’s a great question that I still don’t know how to answer. I don’t like to think of my music as a sound, but more a collection of moments and chapters of my life. I don’t really write in the same genre. If you listen to the four songs I’ve released it will make sense. But I write about stuff that is really serious and personal for me, so when it comes to creating the sound I’m not aiming in a particular direction, more just letting it come to me. And now it’s coming easier than ever, but still not in one way or genre. I grew up on mainly old music, which still, to this day, is my favourite stuff to listen to. I love making people feel, but also to be able to move around. Put it this way, with a lot of my new stuff you can cry and dance at the same time. Well, I do anyway.”
Influences & inspiration
TJO: “My biggest influences are my family. Family is everything for me. My dad inspired me to be onstage. My mum inspires me every day to be the best I can be and help others, she is my rock. My sister is my world and looks too much like me (well she’s older, so maybe I look like her, but that’s something we will never agree on). My nanna is my second mum and my best friend. And my dog Nigel is my little brother. This is everything that inspires me in music for one, but mainly life. They are everything to me and the reason I do this.”
For the love of music
TJO: “I love the release I feel every time I write a song. I write about a lot of personal stuff that is quite serious to me, so a big part of the songwriting is quite an emotional process but it helps me in so many different ways. Since I started releasing music, I have received the most beautiful messages and engaged in some crazy conversations. I love talking real, so when someone messages me and wants to talk real or feel that they can open up even though they might not know me personally, it blows my mind. It’s amazing how close music can bring you together.”
Kicking goals
TJO: “I think the day I got the call with the offer for Splendour. I still can’t believe it and it’s in a months time. HOLY SHIT. I’ve gone to that festival since 2014, and never in my life did I imagine I’d get a chance to play. This show will be one to remember.”
The year ahead
TJO: “I’ve got my debut EP coming out in September which I’m so excited about. We are touring in October and have got some more shows and festivals in the works. I’m now writing my album so I’m very focussed on making that and getting the songs right. It’s coming together quicker than I thought but I’m not going to rush it.”
