2019 was an absolute whirlwind for Freo four-piece Spacey Jane, and in 2020 it doesn’t look like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon.
They might have played their debut gig in their guitarist’s Dad’s yard, but ever since then, they’ve been trading in backyards for the bright lights of stages around the country.
Back in 2017, Spacey Jane arrived on the Perth scene with a bang, delivering a string of singles and a debut EP of crisp, upbeat indie-pop akin to the likes of Ball Park Music or Vampire Weekend. Future singles have seen the band dive further into their garage-pop sound – amping up the grittiness, locking down a knack for catchy melodies, and melting hearts with singer Caleb’s soaring vocals.
Their festival merits are huge – from Yours and Owls to Splendour In The Grass, and Falls Festival to an upcoming appearance at Laneway, but it was their most recent headline tour across November and December, where they lined up back to back sold-out shows that really pointed to the success they’re building on.
Along the way, Spacey Jane have also shared stages with the likes of Car Seat Headrest, Alex Lahey, The Jungle Giants, British India, and Charly Bliss.
Armed with a bevy of irresistible pop-rock jams, Spacey Jane are one of the most exciting bands coming out of Australia and they’re sure to win over every room they play.
With their debut record due out this year, Spacey Jane are well on their way to becoming Australia’s next big thing in indie-rock, that’s why we’ve handpicked them as one of our New For 2020 artists to watch.
The Story
From the beginning
Caleb Harper (guitarist, singer and songwriter): “My stepdad is a great muso and I grew up in church, so I’ve been in and around music for as long as I can remember. I used to perform concerts to an empty street from my front porch when I was really young, so I guess that was the earliest of my musical dreams coming out. I first started playing guitar and singing when I was 14 because I wanted to be able to move myself and others in the way I was moved by the music I was listening to and that’s driven me ever since.”
What you’ll hear
Kieran Lama (drums): “We’re probably best described as an indie-rock/garage-pop band. In terms of how we got here, we don’t really know, but I guess it comes down to what we’ve grown up listening to, and the bands we enjoy and unconsciously emulate in our own writing.”
Influences & inspiration
KL: “I reckon we’ve managed to nail down our biggest musical influences to a few bands/artists – Wilco, Courtney Barnett, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes. Artists we love and who inspire us right now would have to be BENEE, Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey & Kings of Leon.”
For the love of music
CH: “All the people. Meeting new fans at every show, hanging out with other artists who we love and listen to, and probably most of all the opportunity to work alongside people I love so much doing the thing we love the most.”
Kicking goals
KL: “Playing our first theatre show last year is a massive highlight for sure. We booked The Tivoli in Brisbane for our most recent run of headline dates, and it was the first time we’d played a room that size – it felt unreal and like a glimmer of hope toward a career in music.”
The hard yards
CH: “I think trying to juggle fulltime band and fulltime uni/work has been the hardest for me. We’ve all had to make a lot of sacrifices to make the band work, it requires a huge amount of time and energy even at this early stage in our careers so other areas of life tend to take a back seat a lot of the time.”
The year ahead
KL: “There will be heaps of touring. We’re jetting off on the Laneway tour really soon, plus we’re planning at least another lap around Australia, working on all of that right now. We’re also heading out to the UK for our first shows on that side of the world. Plus, of course, the debut album will be out sometime this year too. We’re very excited.”
When we chat in 12 months…
CH: “We’re so excited to release this album, we’ve wanted to put a full LP out for so long, so I just hope that the world loves it as much as we do. Also, we’ll have completed a couple EU/UK tours so definitely hoping we are able to start growing an audience outside of Australia.”

Spacey Jane will perform at Laneway Festival 2020 stopping in Brisbane on Saturday 1 February, Sydney on Sunday 2 February, Adelaide on Friday 7 February, Melbourne on Saturday 8 February, and Fremantle on Sunday 9 February. They’ll also support Ball Park Music at Canberra’s UC Refectory on Thursday 6 February (tickets here), and perform at Hyper Festival on Saturday 14 March (tickets here).
