Kill ‘Em All is released and Metallica arrive

There aren’t many bands that can say they influenced the metal genre the way that Metallica did following the release of their debut album Kill ‘Em All – originally to have been called Metal Up Your Assin July of 1983. Regarded as a ground-breaking album for the thrash metal genre because of its striking musicianship and interesting blend of genres that blurred the line between punk and metal brilliantly. It was an absolute statement of intent – brutal and abrasive, it has gone on to inspire the creation of countless bands since. While it might have taken three years for the album to be critically recognised by the mainstream, it has gone on to become a classic.

Put your name in the record books

Metallica’s discography is full of history-making moments – but two albums well and truly stand out from the bunch and will continue to hold a place in music history for a long time to come. Their third album Master of Puppets built on the foundations the band has laid on their previous two releases while kicking things up ten-fold. Marking Metallica’s major-label debut, the album peaked at 29 on the Billboard 200 and became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum – while turning the youngster into global superstars almost overnight. In 2015, it became the first metal recording to be deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” enough for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the United States Library of Congress.

And they called it Black

Five years later, and Metallica would release their greatest album yet. It was a self-titled effort that has gone on to be known as The Black Album. Home to some of the band’s best known songs, the album marked a change in the band’s sound. It was slower and closer to heavy metal than the thrash metal sound fans had come to love. Thankfully, fans caught on. Becoming the band’s first chart topped, it debuted at number one in ten countries and by September 2018 it spent it’s 500thweek on the Billboard charts – making it one of the four longest-running albums of all time. Surpassing the constraints of the metal genre, Metallicahas been called one of the greatest albums of all time.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Metallica performs at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 2009

On April 4, 2009 – with nearly three decades under their belts – Metallica were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alongside current members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, late bassist Cliff Burton and former bassist Jason Newstead – who left the band in 2001 – were all inducted together. To mark the occasion, the five-strong lineup ripped through renditions of Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman. Metallica have truly locked themselves in as one of the biggest metal bands in music history.
