Matilda the Musical is a must-see event

Every now and again, you are lucky enough to witness a show that just blows you away.

Matilda the Musical is one of those shows and, much like the little girl at the centre of the story, it is absolutely extraordinary.

Matilda the Musical is now showing at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.  Click here to purchase tickets.

Roald Dahl’s classic tale is expertly adapted for the stage with the perfect amount of original and new material. The production is true to the original but has also given the classic tale new life. The writer, Dennis Kelly, won a Tony Award for his work on Matilda the Musical – a just reward for the brilliant effort.

Kelly’s writing is matched by the phenomenal musical nous of Tim Minchin, who wrote the music and lyrics for the production. Minchin’s musical numbers are a highlight of the musical and keep the production tracking along perfectly.

Minchin’s music provides the back drop for Matilda the Musical and helps to drive home the key themes of the original story.

His talent is immense; one minute you are laughing your head off and the next you want to weep. The choreography and set design also deserve to be applauded. They add a dynamic element to Matilda the Musical and will have your eyes darting all over the stage just to keep up.

But the greatest applause has to be withheld for the impeccable performances from the entire cast of Matilda the Musical. The performers are ultimate professionals, portraying their characters faultlessly. The grown up stars of the show are brilliant, but you just can’t go past the incredible talent of the children in Matilda the Musical.

The pint-sized performers are the heart and soul of the production. It is overwhelming to see children with such incredible talent and ability and seeing them up on stage is truly a pleasure. Matilda in particular – played by four young girls, Ingrid Tortelli, Dusty Bursill, Alannah Parfett and Tiana Mirra – is a joy to watch.

This musical is appropriate for kids but it is by no means a show just for children. Matilda the Musical is dripping with references for the big kids and will be loved by all – including people who have no prior knowledge of the book or film.

Matilda the Musical will not be here for long so you better get in quickly if you want to see this absolute masterpiece. The production is now showing at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre with tickets for performances until July 31 now on sale. Click here to buy tickets now.
