Kimbra brings effortless electro pop to Melbourne

We catch the Kiwi favourite and two-time Grammy-winner live in Melbourne

New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra returns to Australia with a new record in tow, emarking on a fresh headline tour in support of her third album, Primal Heart.

The two-time Grammy-winner last performed down under as part of last year’s SUPERSENSE festival in Melbourne, so we were first in line for her latest show at Corner Hotel.

Kimbra’s signature sound encompasses the sold-out venue, a dynamic fusion of electronic funk and pop beats, as symmetrical pastel and neon candy stripes are projected either side of the stage.

The Kiwi’s chatter throws back to her debut album Vows, which she explains was recorded in Melbourne and thus makes the night feel reminiscent.

Early hits like Settle Down and Somebody That I Used To Know (the synonymous Gotye track she featured on) enthuse tonight’s crowd, with an ever-stylish Kimbra at the helm in a clear vinyl dress.

Set highlights come courtesy of funk-driven Sweet Relief and Top of the World, juxtaposed by a solo performance of Past Love which puts Kimbra’s powerful vocals in the spotlight.

Every inch of Kimbra’s performance feels expressive and raw, with consistently smooth sonics ensuring things are equally effortless.
