Update: Statement from Download Festival

It is with intense disappointment that we announce that My Chemical Romance will not be coming to Australia to play Download.

MCR have released the following statement today:

“To our dearest friends –

It is with heavy hearts that we have decided to postpone our performances in Australia and New Zealand. We felt this was the right decision for our fans, our band, our crew, and our families given the current global situation. We apologize to our fans, but please know that we didn’t come to this decision lightly. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to being with you all again as soon as we can.  In the meantime, please be good to each other.”  My Chemical Romance

Given that this announcement has come barely 7 days prior to Download Australia we will not be able to secure an alternative headliner as there is insufficient time to secure visas and arrange the other relevant logistics that are required prior to the festival.

As we are unable to deliver a complete line-up to meet the standard that Download fans both expect and deserve, we have very reluctantly made the decision to cancel Download Australia 2020.

The Download team has been working around the clock to create an unforgettable experience for heavy music fans and we are devastated not to be able to deliver this show to Australian Downloaders as planned.

We are currently working with both My Chemical Romance and Deftones to schedule separate headline shows in Australia in 2020 and will update you all as soon as we have these.

We are also working with a number of artists who have official Download sideshows scheduled, to add headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne next week, stay tuned for these dates.

All ticket purchasers to the Download Melbourne and Sydney 2020 events will receive a full refund including booking and payment processing fees.

We appreciate that the decision to cancel Download Australia will cause huge disappointment and may create major difficulty for ticket holders, for which we sincerely apologise.

Download Festival have dropped their first lineup for 2020 and we are already sharpening our eyeliner pencils in preparation.

Just last week, beloved American rockers and dads of early 2000s emo My Chemical Romance ended their six-year break with the announcement of a single American show (which took mere minutes to sell out) – sending social media into meltdown and breaking the internet in the process.

Now, we can confirm that My Chemical Romance will be heading our way for what is sure to be a couple of powerful sets at Download Festival 2020.

Last on our shores in early 2012, it has been a long wait for an MCR return, so their exclusive Download sets (that’s right friends, there will be no sideshows) is very very big news.

You probably don’t need a history lesson from us, but because we’re so excited, let us wax lyrical about My Chemical Romance for a little bit. We first met the New Jersey band in 2002 with the release of their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, but it wasn’t until 2004 and their (now cult classic) record Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge that the band were skyrocketed to international acclaim. Singles like ‘Helena’, ‘The Ghost of You’, and ‘I’m Not Okay’ became instant anthems for teenagers and young adults around the world. Two years later and My Chemical Romance released The Black Parade and with its lead single ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ and singalong anthem ‘Teenagers’, My Chemical Romance had well and truly cemented themselves as the quintessential sad boys of punk rock. Finally, 2010’s Danger Days continued to push their creativity in an explosive rush of metallic pop – marking what would be their last recorded material. Now, in 2020, we get to dive right back into their back catalogue (not that we’d ever really stopped listening) – but where their music heads now is anyone’s guess.

Now in its third year here in Australia, Download Festival are well versed in the art of curating an incredible day of live music, so you know that the rest of the lineup is just as incredible. Let’s have a quick singalong before we dive right in…

Without further ado, feast your eyes on the 2020 Download Festival lineup:

My Chemical Romance (Only Aus Shows) Deftones | Jimmy Eat World | Clutch (Only Aus Shows) Ministry | In Flames | Testament | Alestorm (Only Aus Shows) | Carcass | Lacuna Coil (Only Aus Shows) | Hands Like Houses | In Hearts Wake | The HU | Baroness | Ne Obliviscaris | Bodyjar | New Years Day | Clowns | Venom Prison | SKYND | Thornhill |Disentomb | Stand Atlantic | Plini | RedHook | Dregg

This week we heard news that Deftones have already recorded an album’s worth of new music, with frontman Chino Moreno confirming that the follow up to 2016’s Gore has been in the works for about a year and will definitely be out next year. Whether it’s released before their visit to our shores in March is still an unknown, but you can bet that you’ll be hearing a chunk of fresh Deftones tunes at Download. With seven incredible, boundary-pushing albums already under their belts, it must be getting pretty tricky to lock down a setlist.

Nearly three decades in, Arizona alt-rockers Jimmy Eat World are still at the top of their game. From their 2001 breakthrough Bleed American (that gave us singles like ‘The Middle’ and ‘Sweetness’) all the way to their freshly released tenth album Surviving, Australian fans have remained in love with Jimmy Eat World. Following a short run of Australian shows in 2017, we are stoked to welcome the band back to the festival stages they belong on.

While the international contingent of the Download lineup is five x fire emojis with the likes of Clutch!, In Flames, Alestorm, and The HU all making their way Down Under, the local representatives are more than holding their own. Canberra’s Hands Like Houses and Byron Bay lads In Hearts Wake join the likes of Bodyjar, Ne Obliviscaris, Stand Atlantic, RedHook and Clowns – and that’s only scratching the surface.

What makes this announcement even wilder is that there is still more to come. Keep your eyes locked here as we’ll update you when more lineup news is revealed.
