Bach with a vengeance

Bach and breakdancing is like mixing oil and water, right? Wrong! Red Bull Flying Bach is crushing stereotypes and mixing classical culture with the urban art form to create a ground-breaking performance that will speak to a wide audience.

Award-winning dance crew, Flying Steps, will fuse their high energy, explosive breakdancing moves with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Opera Director Christoph Hagel joins Flying Steps for a slick mix of pianos, harpsichord and electro beats, with head spins, freezes and power moves.

The Red Bull Flying Bach tour has been seen by many people all around the globe and is currently on a world tour that will see them visit Australia in October, following performances in Europe, USA, South America, Asia and the Middle East.

Vartan Bassil, choreographer and mastermind behind Red Bull Flying Bach, said he and his crew was excited to return to Australia for the upcoming shows.

“Our first visit to Australia in 2013 was a huge success and we’re really excited that this time, we can take the production to followers of the urban and classical worlds across multiple states and cities,” Mr Bassil said.
“Red Bull Flying Bach really offers something unique – it introduces classical music to the street scene, but also allows high art fans to experience the best in urban dance.”

Christoph Hagel added: “The sharpness, freshness and coolness of Bach’s preludes and fugues work faultlessly with the dance style of the Flying Steps.

“When this type of breakdances comes together with the sound of piano and harpsichord, the incredible masterpieces of Bach are brought to life and made relevant for a modern audience,” he said.

Red Bull Flying Bach will be performed at the Arts Centre Melbourne State Theatre from October 1 to October 4 and Sydney’s State Theatre between October 10 and 12. Click here to purchase tickets.
