5 things we learned at 5SOS’ intimate Melbourne show
5 Seconds of Summer offer a taste of their upcoming Australian tour, and we're ready for it.
They’re back, and 5SOS aren’t holding back. Ahead of their August tour, we caught the band at Melbourne’s 170 Russell for what would be one of their most intimate Australian gigs for some time.
We learned a few things along the way…
Youngblood deserves to be #1
Until last month, it had been almost two years since an Australian song had reached #1 on the ARIA Singles chart. 5 Seconds of Summer successfully broke the drought with new single Youngblood. Seeing the band perform the now-hit track live cements it as a masterful pop song from start to finish.
It still feels effortless
In case there was ever any doubt, 5SOS still function effortlessly on stage. Wherever they arrive between 2014’s self-titled album and 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good, the foursome still operate like a well-oiled machine.
Want You Back signals the next era of 5SOS
With Luke Hemmings welcoming fans to 5SOS part three, recent single Want You Back acts like the bridge between past and present. Ending their set with the track is a smart move, and we feel somewhat initiated into the next stage of their reign as one of Australia’s biggest bands.
So. Many. Sing. Alongs.
Thankfully tonight’s Melbourne crowd have come prepared because there’s crowd participation at every turn. Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton know exactly when to turn the spotlight on the crowd and it’s a group effort right through to the final screams.
They’re a flawless live band
It would be easy for 5SOS to coast through their live shows. With number one records in the bag and a legion of adoring fans that will undoubtably never leave them, they could probably just turn up and do the bare minimum. Thankfully, they don’t. Instead, they flourish with slick electro-pop hooks and a new, indie-driven precision.
