Q&A: Voyager tell us all about their Aussie tour with Deftones

Perth’s prog metallers, Voyager, have quite the week ahead of them as they head out on tour with Deftones and Karnivool.

We caught up with the band as they packed up their gear for the Aussie tour, with drummer Ash even dishing some details on their latest writing and recording adventures.

Check out the full chat below and head over to Ticketmaster.com.au for full tour dates and tickets.

Yove been super busy lately, how’s everyone feeling in the band?

“Excited! After the last run around Europe we has some time to start writing for album six and it all came together really well. It’s a very interesting sound for us, and we’re already in the throes of recording it. Add to that a sweet tour with Deftones and Karnivool, and you’ve got some happy little campers here!”

Do you always tend to write new material while you’re on the road?

“That’s never really happened for us before. When you’re flying, driving, loading, unloading, setting up, breaking down, warming up, playing, selling merch, meeting the fans, and checking in back home to make sure you haven’t been fired, there isn’t really much time for writing!”

How’re you feeling about the Deftones tour?

“Super stoked! Besides playing the shows, I’m pretty happy I get to watch ‘Vool and Deftones five times in a row.”

You’re playing some of Oz’s best venues on this run, any particular favourites?

“We’re actually looking forward to playing Metro’s Perth. We’ve all been to so many shows there, but we’ve never played it before. It’ll be great to see things from the other side of the stage.”

How do you approach support slots like this – is there still that pressure to win over new fans?

“There is pressure I suppose, but that’s not a bad thing – it just gives us the impetus to do the best job we can. As a support we always try to have a good time, and get everyone in the crowd to have fun. We’ve got a little ‘icebreaker’ track stuck in our set somewhere that will hopefully get the party started!”

Deftones - Prayers/Triangles (Official Music Video)

If you could cover any Deftones track, or even perform it on stage with them, which would it be?

“You have to say My Own Summer just because. But also, I’m kind of obsessed with the song Needles and Pins from their self-titled album. Also, Prayers/Triangles is an absolute belter.”

For anyone coming to the Deftones shows, why should they get down early to see your set?

“All the bands on this bill play their own flavour of heavy music, and don’t you wanna try all the things? We’ll serenade you, we’ll make you move, and we’ll put a little smile on your face.”
